RE-late

With this series I’m opening up to something, a not so visible track that I have had going on for a long time. A very long time… for decades. The precursors are my re-paintings from the ’80s and ’90s, when I re-painted some of my early works. A kind of generational work: Based on and referring to something old, something new arises, which can then again become the subject of something even newer (note 1).

The current series … and what it represents … has been on my mind since my trauma in 2004 … and even before that. I have in private made many approaches and attempts to get it off the ramp. I just have not succeeded in finding the right form.

Now I hazard an eye, as they say when you are equal parts uncertain and certain…

The focal point of the series is relationships and support. Two words, two concepts that I am related to and that I find again and again in much of what I think is worth talking about.

But the series is also a reference to my works from the late ’80s and early ’90s. Works that have not received the attention they deserve. It is said We are told that time is the wisest counselor of all… I agree. But despite the fact that 30 years have passed, that period of my life stands as the most vital one… for me. A period when my ambition was to add to the history of art… no less.

It did not work out that way… The more enthusiastic work and resulting achievements, never looking back nor around, the more I experienced moments of happiness, but also a sneaking feeling of having ended up in a place where I was quite alone. Alone with an art that was met with silence.

I broke down … and the rest is described in detail elsewhere … throughout my RE-flower project (note 2).

This series has a dual-track ambition: On the one hand, I want to pursue whether it is possible to flourish again… whether it is possible for me artistically to reach the level where I once was. Hence RE-flower. On the other I want to draw attention to some early works that I still like very much and which, to this day, I still believe have some qualities. Both at a personal level and in relation to the history of art.
As for the last: Here we may disagree… but that’s culture 🙂

Each work in the RE-late series bears a title that refers to the inherent work, an earlier work represented by a single element, a faint shadow or just an invisible underlying layout.

In addition, I have formulated a brief description of the reference and the associated intention as I remember them.
